AD Ports breaks ground on $380m Launada port expansion

Abu Dhabi - Mubasher: Abu Dhabi Ports Company (AD Ports) has started construction on the Noatum Ports Luanda Terminal at the Port of Luanda, a major port modernization project in Angola.

The project has an initial investment of $250 million and is expected to reach up to $380 million over a 20-year concession period extendable until 2055, according to Emirates News Agency (WAM).

The 18-month project will deliver advanced infrastructure, advanced technology, and sustainable equipment. It will position Luanda as one of the key maritime and logistics hubs in Central and West Africa.

AD Ports holds an 81% stake in the terminal and a 90% stake in Noatum Unicargas Logistics, responsible for integrated logistics operations and fleet modernization.

Mohammed Al Tamimi, CEO of Noatum Ports, said: “Breaking ground on the Noatum Ports - Luanda Terminal marks a transformative moment for AD Ports Group, for Angola, and for the wider region.”

"By modernizing this vital gateway, we are helping position Luanda as a leading maritime and logistics hub in Central and West Africa. In addition, we are unlocking new jobs, supporting skills development, and driving inclusive economic growth alongside greater connectivity for businesses and communities where we operate,” he added.

Spanning 192,000 square meters with a 16-metre draft, the Luanda terminal will handle super post-panamax vessels of up to 14,000 TEUs.

Moreover, it will include three STS cranes, eight hybrid RTGs, and advanced IT systems.

Once it is completed, which is expected to take place in the first quarter (Q1) of 2027, the container capacity will rise to 350,000 TEUs, and Ro-Ro volumes will exceed 40,000 vehicles.

Over the past three years, AD Ports has invested over $800 million across Africa in Egypt, Congo, Tanzania, and Angola.

During the first half (H1) of 2025, AD Ports logged 8% higher net profits valued at AED 908.26 million, compared to AED 838.83 million in H1-24.
