UAE -Mubasher: Dubai Municipality has awarded five contracts at a combined value of AED 2.50 billion under phase two of the AED 30 billion Tasreef Program to expand and strengthen Dubai's stormwater drainage network.
The projects will serve 30 key areas covering 430 million square meters (m²) and support a projected population of three million by 2040, according to a press release.
Meanwhile, the package includes three execution contracts and two design-and-study contracts. They are signed with global infrastructure companies such as DeTech Contracting and China State Construction Engineering Corporation, along with specialized consultancy firms.
Adel Al Marzouqi, the CEO of the Waste and Sewerage Agency at Dubai Municipality, said: “The new projects under phase two of the Tasreef Program mark an advanced step in enhancing the efficiency and sustainability of Dubai’s stormwater drainage system, increasing network capacity in key areas and strengthening infrastructure readiness to address climate challenges while ensuring service continuity and elevating safety standards and quality of life.”
Integrated network
Projects under the new contracts include a main drainage tunnel up to four meters in diameter connecting communities along Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road and Al Yalayis Road, as well as a 27-kilometer (km) integrated network between Sheikh Zayed Road and Al Jamayel Road.
They also feature a drainage tunnel with a modern pumping station along Dubai–Al Ain Road and Sheikh Zayed bin Hamdan Al Nahyan Street.
On the other hand, the design contracts cover integrated stormwater and groundwater systems in Al Marmoom and Saih Al Salam.
The initiatives align with efforts to build advanced, resilient infrastructure and enhance stormwater drainage efficiency to serve the UAE for the next century.
Phase two builds on the municipality’s strategic approach from phase one to develop a comprehensive drainage system that reduces flood risks and enhances infrastructure efficiency. It also supports Dubai’s 2040 Urban Master Plan and the nation’s climate neutrality objectives.
Marwan Ahmed bin Ghalita, the Director General of Dubai Municipality, commented: “The Tasreef program represents a practical model of long-term strategic planning adopted by Dubai Municipality across the management of the city’s operations and infrastructure assets.”
“Our goal is to develop an integrated system for stormwater management and drainage that enhances city readiness, preserves resource sustainability, and safeguards the safety and quality of life of residents and visitors, reinforcing Dubai’s position as the best city in the world to live and work,” he added.
